Welcome to our school website!

At our school each child is valued and their unique set of skills and talents developed so that they can ‘be the best that they can be’. Our belief is that learning should be exciting and engaging. We want every child to leave our school ready for the next stage in their education and with a real appetite for learning.

We have high aspirations for every child that attends our school and a strong track record of achieving academic success. Equally, we ensure children at Bishop’s Waltham Junior are able to explore their full range of talents and interests.

Alongside a stimulating and varied curriculum, we offer a range of sporting, musical and artistic enrichment activities including successful sports clubs, drama productions and music concerts.

We place great emphasis on developing children’s personal skills and believe in the importance of developing kind, caring and respectful individuals. Behaviour in our school is very good and we offer children high quality care and pastoral support. We have strong systems in place to support children with additional learning needs and have a fully qualified Special Needs Co-ordinator on the staff team.

I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of Bishop’s Waltham Junior School and of the children and staff who contribute so much to the life of the school.

If you would like to find out more about the school or to arrange a visit please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hampshire Police Leads Informative Assembly on Knife Crime Awareness.

This afternoon, our school had the privilege of hosting an enlightening assembly led by members of the Hampshire Police force. Aimed at our attentive Year 5 and 6 pupils, the session delved into the critical issue of knife crime, shedding light on its dangers, consequences, and the ripple effects it sends through families and communities.

The assembly served as a crucial educational opportunity, providing our pupils with a deeper understanding of the ramifications of carrying knives and the legal implications attached. Through engaging discussions and impactful presentations, Hampshire Police effectively conveyed the gravity of this societal issue and emphasized the importance of making informed and responsible choices.

One of the key takeaways was the discussion surrounding the age of criminal responsibility, offering our pupils clarity on the legal framework and the implications it holds for their actions. Moreover, the session highlighted the devastating impact knife crime can have on individuals, families, and wider society, underscoring the urgency of collective action in addressing and preventing such incidents.

By partnering with Hampshire Police for this assembly, we are not only fulfilling our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment but also empowering our pupils with the knowledge and awareness necessary to navigate the complexities of the world around them. It is through initiatives like these that we equip our young learners with the tools to make positive choices and contribute to the creation of safer communities.

As a school community, we stand united against knife crime, and we are grateful to Hampshire Police for their dedication and expertise in educating and inspiring our pupils. Let us continue to work together to combat this issue and foster a culture of safety, respect, and responsibility.

Swimming Survival Lessons
In their penultimate swimming lesson of the year yesterday, Mrs Milne's swimming group (Y3) focussed on some survival basics.  We talked about how/when they may get into trouble in open water, and discussed important survival skills.

The group are now excellent at conserving energy whilst treading water, and today managed 3 minutes no problem!  All children now know that if they see someone in trouble in the water, they should never get in to try to rescue them.  They learnt some useful reach and throwing rescues and practised these.

During the lesson, Mrs Milne blew a long whistle, and was impressed that all children remembered to exit the pool immediately.  They definitely deserve a fun final session next week!

Friday 17th May - Year 6 Update

Two important events have taken place in Year 6 this week.

First of all, the children have done their end of Key Stage 2 SAT tests.  These have been a culmination of all the work they have done in English and maths this year - and indeed, a culmination of the work they have done since Year 3.  As usual, the tests were challenging, and children had to draw on all their knowledge of reading, SPAG, arithmetic and mathematical reasoning to get through them.  When the tests are released to the public in a few weeks time, we'll share some examples of the questions they faced.  We now have to wait until almost the end of the year for their results to come back, but whatever they are, we are extremely proud of the effort made by all the children, and the resilience they showed in tackling this milestone.  A big well done to them all.

More excitingly, perhaps, we also introduced the children to their end of year production - The Greatest Show.  This production is new to us - it's not one we've done before - so we're enjoying getting to grips with a new script and a new set of songs.  The children have begun learning the songs (along with Miss Pascoe's bespoke choreography) and today, we held auditions for both acting and signing parts.  Next week, we'll be giving the children their roles so they can get on with learning and practising their lines over the weekend.  Incredible as it may seem, we only have 34 school days now before our first performance is due to take place, so we have an awful lot to do in a short space of time, but this should be an exciting experience for all involved.  We're looking forward to sharing the outcome in July.

Year 4 Update- Friday 17th May

It’s all happening in Year 4!

We have had another full week practicing for the Multiplication Tables Check which will be happening the second week after half term break. All the children are doing so well and they have all had the opportunity to practice using the Government Practice App. It has given them a chance to get a feeling for what it would be like on the day. Keep up the good work Year 4. Nearly there.

Excitement is in the air in Year 4 this week as we creep closer to the Stubbington Residential (and that is just the adults!). We have almost finished packing and we have planned some lovely activities for those children remaining at school. Please pack carefully for your child, making sure they have both sun cream and wellies as the weather could be variable, whilst keeping your fingers crossed for sun!

We continue our writing based around the book Varjak Paw. We are all thoroughly enjoying the book and it has been inspiring some wonderful writing about a cats first hunting trip. The descriptive language being used is bringing the stories to life. Ask your children to tell you about their hunting story.

Towards the end of this week we began our Year 4 Summer Term art unit on Typography. The children have been investigating some artists who use typography and designing their own different styles of print. After Stubbington and the half term break they will continue this topic and experiment with different printing methods.

Another fun packed half term is coming to an end and we would ask you to encourage your children to keep up the momentum with their tables. A week at Stubbington off timetable and a week of holiday is a long time and we don't want them to slip back. Many thanks.
